Contemporary Italian sculpture by Nico Vascellari

The musical beginnings of Nico Vascellari (1976) determined the preoccupations of his art. Since his teenage years, he has played in his hardcore band With Love. He originally chose Film History for his studies, so video works are an integral part of his artistic oeuvre.

In his spare time, instead of skateboarding with the team, he visited galleries. A love for art was born, especially for the conceptual works of Marina Abramović and Bruce Nauman. On this one link you can find out more about Marina Abramović's exhibition "Energy Transformation".

I felt a lack of physicality and danger in those quiet, safe spaces, which contrasted sharply with the unpredictable energy of our shows in squats and youth centres. That contrast sparked the urge to develop something new, blending the intensity of live music with the conceptual depth of performance. That’s when I knew I wanted to become an artist.

Nico Vascellari and sound

Sound is a significant part of Nico Vascellari's art, even when it is physically represented by engine parts in sculptures. The observer can reproduce it in his mind at the sight of the machinery placed in the entrails of animals. That is the theme of the exhibition I visited in Florence, "Malma".

The relationship between man and nature can be considered through the exhibited works. The question is: What are we willing to sacrifice for new values?
